Integrative Narative
As I became older I never really knew what to study. Many things caught my attention in school, but I never truly saw myself working within a specific area or subject. However, that changed one day thanks to someone and their racism. The moment someone told me “do not speak Mexican" became one of the turning points in my life. That moment changed my life and sparked a feeling, urge, passion and much more to fight back with education. Why would I not speak my native tongue? Was I doing anything wrong? Was I harming anyone? These and many other questions became a base to research and try to have a better understanding of my native tongue. Before I made the final decision of what I wanted to study or make a career out of, I did a lot of thinking and really analyzed what was the best outcome. Most importantly, I reflected on what was the most important thing for me and where would I see myself being the most comfortable and doing something I was going to enjoy. I wanted to peruse an education and carrier that each day I will wake up to and look forward to keep growing.
Ever since the moment when I was told “do not speak Mexican”, I knew simply having my arms crossed was not option. With the power of education and wisdom I was going to do something and fight back. When people mention similar ignorant comments, I do not feel hate, rather I try and educate them. I try and help them view what they are saying from a different perspective. Violence is not a solution for this problem instead education and informing people is the way to help. I never truly saw myself as someone who can make change. Slowly, through my journey, I have experienced things that have opened my eyes to understanding that there is a world full of hate and ignorance. We decide how we can change those aspects. Working with children has made me realize that if we can influence them in a positive aspect we can change their future. The youth is our future and we are the futures history.
Arriving to CSU Monterey Bay has been a wonderful and life changing moment. Through the courses I have learned how to practice and develop my academic skills such as language and linguistics skill and reading proficiency; connecting with MLO 1 and MLO 2. However, I was unsure at first what to expect from the major. Every day I looked forward to learning and being exposed to new information. One of my first Spanish cultural classes was Mayan Civilization, I left that class wanting to learn more. I became fascinated and astonished by such incredible culture. That class pushed me to keep learning about my roots and history. I progressed into more Spanish courses where the courses helped me develop my Spanish speaking, writing and reading skills. The major also helped learn and understand different cultures. In order to understand my roots, I had to learn about other cultures and time periods connecting it MLO 3 and MLO 4. That was a fascinating moment to understanding who we are and how we arrived to where we are now.
It did not take long for me to become interested and curios in my Spanish courses. I felt proud and fortunate to have the mentors and professors that guided me through my journey. Each class was different and unique, but most importantly each professor helped everyone gain knowledge, learn, gain different perspectives and most importantly give us a voice. One can be tested over and over about the same material but for me memorizing is not my goal. My goal is to apply the concept, theories, philosophy and much more to the world I am exposed to. We can never stop learning, there is always something we can improve or learn from. It is upon those who strive for change and a better future to create the path for through knowledge and wisdom.
My goal is to keep learning and through my job and help those who have been oppressed or have not been able to express their concerns. I want to become someone that is a voice or can inspire others to move forward in life. We should not be oppressed due to our culture, persona and much less our language. I do not hate those for discriminating me or trying to shut me down. I thank them for opening my eyes and the path to achieve success in life. Most important helping strive to give aid to those who do not have the same opportunity as me or cannot express themselves.
