Reflective Narrative:
This course helped me develop my services learning skills. The course focused on understanding the different components society and the reflection upon people. In class, we observed documents videos and other information which helped us develop our skills and being open to others problems. I conducted my service learning in Martin King Jr. Elementary school. Through my volunteer help I was able to help children in different academic aspects such as; Math, English, Reading, and other school related components. I was able to complete more than 35 hours of volunteered work. |
Reflective Narrative:
This coursed helped me in different ways interact and learn more about Service Learning. My service site was the Marina Teen center where I was exposed to interact with many students from all types of background. A big component that helped me learn was have a journal and self-reflecting on what I learned and how each visit was. Another important aspect was being able to not only talk to the student but to the staff and listen to their concerns and thoughts about how the students develop. Through the material I was able to furthermore expand and learn about the different components of Service Learning. |
I had little to no experience and had not really been exposed to Service Learning, arriving to CSU Monterey Bay changed that for me. I truly enjoyed working with the children and people who needed help. My first experience in service learning came with working with CPY (Community Youth for Youth) and after working with the Teen Center in Marina. I was a little nervous and unsure what to expect but as usual I always tried to be opened minded and learn the most I could. Every visit was an opportunity to be exposed to different scenarios, the readings in class and discussion made it much easier to take the "ideal" decision and know what to do. No day was the same in my service learning sites, each kid had a story to tell and express their feelings.
Reflecting on the visits was a great way to understand what the point of Service Learning is. Growing up I was not exposed to get help from others, many times I felt alone and without a voice. In my second Service Learning course I was determined to make the most out of it and learn as much as possible. I had already understood how things worked thanks to my previous Service Learning course. Each day was unique and different, I tried to talk and play with the children as much as possible. As I grew older many times I was shamed because I spoke "Mexican." I knew I wanted to help and make justice for every kid I could that like me was shamed, my goal was to help those have a voice. It was not only the kids that spoke Spanish but kids that did not speak English. In couple occasions I was able to interact with a student that had just arrived to the United States and knew little to know English. Many times the child seemed scared and alone, I did my best to help that kid and others get on their feet and make friends. Most important I tried to give him that support that he was not alone.
I understand that many times it can take nothing to make a kid's day simply by listening to an achievement or their problems. That sense of social responsibility can be difficult, taking a lot of effort and time but many times it is simpler than we think. In order to learn as much as I could I wanted to be divers and learn more from different kids and talk to them. Having the opportunity to interact with the kids was a learning process for me. Each kid has his own persona and different way of communication.
Service Learning helped me in many ways in helping interact with children and learning from them. By doing such I was able to step out of my comfort zone and become more divers, enhance my language skills and cultural knowledge. I was able to speak to some of these student in Spanish, kids that were ashamed to speak English because their pronunciation was not the best. Having the opportunity to speak with them I learned where they come from and learn about their background. Service Learning helped me get out of my comfort zone and helped me achieve that idea to help others and understand that there exist ways to help.
