The student develops an understanding of the structure of the Spanish language and is able to use an appropriate level of formality according to the situation, whether in writing or in speech.
- The student completes between two and six courses (depending on his or her choice of emphasis, as either language and linguistics knowledge or literary and cultural knowledge) related to the Spanish language and linguistics. These courses deal with: the sound system of Spanish, the history of Spanish, advanced grammar, Spanish-English translation, a general introduction to Spanish linguistics, Spanish for professional application (medical, legal, etc. spheres), composition and conversation.
The courses that have helped me... Under this criteria, I have completed the courses: SPAN 313: Intro to Lingusitics (Fall 2016), SPAN 305: Spanish for Professionals (Pending for spring 2017), and LING 392: Linguistics (Sping 2017)
Reflection:
My first course of linguistics was LING 392, where I was able to learn of the different components of linguistics. Not only did I learn about the different concepts and theories, but I learned how linguistics work. Entering the class, I knew little to nothing about linguistic and shortly was able to learn things I used on a regular basis. I was able to compare between the English and Spanish language and the significant difference. My first course opened the doors to also understand how sounds are produced and how language develops over time. After taking LING 392 I had a general idea how linguistic works which made it easier to understand linguistics in Spanish. Having in mind some changes for example in Spanish there is only five vowel sounds while in English there is three times more. Thanks to learning about linguistic I was able to improve my grammar and my pronunciation. The class has given me the tools to teach others and also help them with problems they have. I will continue to practice this subject and keep learning. This MLO has truly helped me in my academic and personal life.
