LING 392: Nature of Language & Language Acquisition
Nature of Language & Language Acquisition introduces the scientific study of language, which includes theoretical concepts (e.g. structural linguistics, sociolinguistics, language development in first and second language acquisition) and application of linguistics in reading and writing development. Students develop a knowledge base in linguistics, phonemic awareness, and syntax, and apply it in real-world educational settings.
Reflective Narrative:
This course was extremely helpful for the development of my language skills. I was able to learn a lot of information from different aspects of what a language is composed of. Some of the topics we learned in class were phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, the type of pronunciation of the vowels and many other aspects. Through the class, we were also exposed to how each different sound is produced and the difference with the English language and other languages that share similar and distinct traits. One of the way in which we put to practice our skills was creating a presentation and paper in which we listened to someone whose native language was not English. From there we listen to their speaking abilities and analyzed the components in a linguistic aspect.
